From AskArt:
The Village Voice said of Henry:"Henry watching is always a fascinating activity." Other admirers have compared him to Picasso in the sense of being the major transformative artist of his time.
Robert Henry was born in Brooklyn in 1933 and maintained an extended attachment to his New York roots during his early training and professional life. He received a BA from Brooklyn College and switching from engineering to art studied under Ad Reinhardt and Kurt Seligman. Perhaps his most significant educational experience was the three years he spent in N.Y. and Provincetown with legendary teacher/artist Hans Hoffman.
Eventually Henry became a major teacher and professor at Brooklyn College and at his adopted home of Wellfleet/Provincetown on Cape Cod at the Province Town Art Association and Museum. He also lectured throughout the U.S. as well as Japan and China, and taught at the Vermont Studio School.
He is best recognized for both his abstract expressionism pieces as well as figurative expressionism. His fluid abstract works are infused with spiritual feelings and psychological space. His figurative paintings and sketches have been compared to one-act plays or short stories.
He was married to fellow, highly regarded artist, Selina Trieff for 50 years before her passing. They met in Brooklyn and worked in New York City for a number of years before setting up a studio on Commercial Street in Provincetown where they became cornerstones of the 'Ptown' art colony.
Bob served as President of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for four years. At age 84, (2017), he still posts his new work at several galleries and regularly on his website and Facebook! He is represented and exhibits with many galleries. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Village Voice, Provincetown Banner, Art News and the Boston Globe.
His work is in the permanent collection of the Kresege Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Art, New Britain Museum of American Art, Newberger Museum and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
He and his wife have been recently featured in a documentary:Their Lives in Art-Robert Henry & Selina Trieff.
