Studio pottery mug attributed to Dame Lucie Rie (Austrian; 1902-1995).  Marked.

Dame Lucie Rie has often been called the "godmother of modern ceramics." Rie was born in Vienna, Austria in 1902 and opened her first studio in Vienna in 1925. Soon after, she began earning respect and showing her work widely in the city.

In 1937, she notably exhibited her works at the Paris International Exhibition. Nazi invasion in 1938 in Austria forced Rie to emigrate to the UK just as her career was blossoming at home. During the war, she made glass and ceramic buttons which are now housed in fashion and design museums. Through a lengthy partnership with fellow Austrian Hans Coper, her works reached commercial and artistic markets throughout Europe. Rie was granted Damehood in 1991 for her significant contributions to the arts of Britain. Her works are now held in museums such as MoMA and the British Museum.
