Born in Cologne, Germany as Hans Ulrich Ernst, Jimmy Ernst was the son of Modern artist Max Ernst and art historian Luise Straus-Ernst. Jimmy, whose mother was Jewish, was able to flee Nazi Germany in 1938 and immigrate to the United States. In 1942, Ernst was the director of Peggy Guggenheim's The Art of This Century gallery. In 1950, he was a part of the famous "Irascible Eighteen," along with Abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, who protested the exhibition policy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
