1995 mixed media drawing titled They Make a Desolation and Call It Peace by the artist Gerald G. Boyce (American; 1925-1999). This highly detailed silverpoint drawing with casein depicts a towering arch with the inscription "Ubi Solitudinem Faciunt Pacem Appellant," the title of the work in Latin. The work is signed and dated on the right side of the arch.

Measurements: 27.25” H x 23.25” W x 1” D (frame); 17.75” H x 13.75" W (image).

Artist biography:

Born in Embarrass, Wisconsin, Boyce graduated with an undergraduate Science degree from Wisconsin State University in 1949 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He later completed postgraduate degrees from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Oxford University, and the Americano Guatemalteco Instituto in Guatemala. Boyce had an extensive teaching career, mostly as the chair of the Art Department, as well as an art history professor, at the University of Indianapolis. He also taught at Fresno State College, St. John's University, Indiana University, and Wabash College. He exhibited his own art extensively and his works have been included at exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Museum, as well as many other museums, galleries, and universities.

Buyer pays shipping and handling costs. Items eligible for in-house shipping will be marked as such on the catalog entry for the item. Large items and certain high value items we do not ship and a third party shipping company will need to be used. We can refer you to several local 3rd party shipping companies.

 

For items eligible for in-house shipping, within 1-3 days of the auction ending, you will receive by email an invoice with the balance for your auction item(s) and a shipping quote from our in-house shipping department. If you agree to our shipping quote, you can pay the invoice online and the item will be packed and shipped within 5-10 business days for most items. If you do not agree to our shipping quote, we can refer you to one of our 3rd party shipping partners. International orders (outside of Canada) will be considered on a case by case basis whether in-house shipping will be offered.  Local orders will not have a shipping quote included on their invoice.

 

For in-house shipping, our fees include all packaging time and materials, handling, insurance and freight charges unless otherwise noted. Shipping costs are calculated on dimensional weight. The costs to ship may exceed the value of the item(s). You can contact us before a sale to request a shipping estimate, the estimate might be slightly more or less than the final cost. Packages shipped to multi-unit addresses or those valued at $200 or more will require signature confirmation. For international shipping, buyer is responsible for all customs fees, import taxes, VAT, duties and any other fee associated with the purchase. All customs forms completed by Sheafer & King LLC will reflect the accurate sales price including Hammer Price, Buyer’s Premium, and any other fees.
